Humulin R
Humulin R is regular human insulin with an intermediate onset and duration compared to rapid-acting and long-acting insulins. It’s used by some bodybuilders who prefer its more predictable timing compared to analog insulins.
Humulin R has a slower onset (30-60 minutes) and longer duration (6-8 hours) compared to rapid-acting insulins like Humalog or Novolog. This makes timing more critical but also provides a longer window of anabolic activity.
Humulin R is chosen when users want insulin but prefer a slower onset and a longer feeding window than rapid analogs provide. Some also prefer it because the timing can feel more predictable once they understand it.
- Inject 30-60 minutes before planned carbohydrate intake
- Longer duration requires sustained carbohydrate intake over 6-8 hours
- Start with very low doses (2-4 IU) due to longer duration
- More predictable timing but requires longer commitment to feeding
- Monitor blood glucose for full duration of action
Use context
Humulin R sits between rapid insulins and long-acting insulins in practical feel. It comes on slower and lasts longer than Humalog Insulin or Novolog Insulin, which tempts some users to call it more manageable. That is only partly true. It is easier to plan around if the user is disciplined, but the longer active tail also means there is more time to make a mistake.
The biggest mistake is treating it like rapid insulin and underestimating how long the low-glucose risk hangs around after the obvious meal window has passed. Another is stacking doses because the onset feels slow.
Compared with Humalog Insulin or Novolog Insulin, Humulin R has a wider active window and therefore a wider opportunity to make mistakes. Compared with Lantus Insulin, it is still easier to confine to a deliberate part of the day.
